Clark County School District Gives Educators in 241 Elementary Schools Access to Lexia’s LETRS Professional Learning

The nation’s fifth largest district commits to using science of reading as a pillar in its strategic plan for boosting student success districtwide

Clark County School District (CCSD) in Nevada, has made Lexia LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional learning programs available to most elementary schools in the district with a plan to continue expanding the program to additional elementary and early childhood teachers and administrators. Offered by Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group company, LETRS professional learning programs provide educators with the deep knowledge required to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading.

Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and leaders in the field of literacy, the LETRS suite provides practical support with tools that are available 24/7—online and in print. It also offers professional learning sessions led by national LETRS experts. These sessions provide classroom application examples of the learnings and refine and extend participants’ understanding of the content. The LETRS suite consists of three professional learning programs:

  • Lexia LETRS for Elementary Educators
  • Lexia LETRS for Early Childhood Educators
  • Lexia LETRS for Administrators

“Student academic success is our core business,” said CCSD Superintendent, Dr. Jesus F. Jara. “We must continue to focus on our hard-working educators and provide them with the tools to improve reading outcomes as students continue to rebound from the pandemic.”

CCSD used Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER) to implement the programs. First, a cohort of literacy strategists in CCSD’s Read by Grade 3 (RBG3) program began a pilot of Lexia LETRS for Elementary Educators program in January 2022. The professional learning program provides the research, depth of knowledge, and capabilities for teaching literacy skills to a wide range of students.

CCSD is also providing its elementary school administrators who support literacy instruction with the LETRS for Administrators program and its PreK educators with the LETRS for Early Childhood Educators program. Lexia LETRS for Administrators program equips instructional leaders to create sustainable. systems and structures in their schools and districts for achieving high levels of academic performance and growth in literacy. Lexia LETRS for Early Childhood Educators program provides vital, applicable information about the foundational skills young children need before learning to read and write.

The programs will play an important role in CCSD’s strategic plan, Focus: 2024, which aims to have all the district’s schools rated three stars or higher on the Nevada School Performance Framework.

“Another major objective of Focus:2024 is to ensure that at least 90% of CCSD students are college and career ready when they graduate,” said Lexia Learning President, Nick Gaehde. “The good news is that more and more educators are understanding how the science of reading boosts student success and are embracing what the program can help them accomplish with their students. We’re excited that CCSD has selected Lexia LETRS professional learning programs to help support the great work their teachers and administrators will undertake in the months and years ahead.”
