CITGO & Discovery Education Announce 2021 Fueling Education Challenge Winners

CITGO Petroleum Corporation and Discovery Education today announced the winners of the 2021 Fueling Education Challenge. Building upon the CITGO Fueling Education initiative with Discovery Education, students in grades 5-8 were asked to identify a community problem and share a solution aligned to one of the four following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: safety and well-being, quality education, sustainable cities and communities, and life on land.

The winning 2021 Fueling Education Challenge winners are:

First Place: Camellia S., an 8th grader from Henrico County Public Schools in Henrico, VA, for their project using artificial intelligence to detect skin cancer.

Second Place: Katelyn C., an 8th grader from Hernando County School District in Brooksville, FL, for their project building sustainable vegetation options in urban settings.

Third Place: Troy E., a 5th grader from the Kuna School District in Meridian, ID, for their upcycling project that keeps materials out of landfills while keeping the environment clean.

“At CITGO, we are committed to connecting students to educational experiences that fuel lifelong success,” said Kate Robbins, General Manager Corporate Communications at CITGO. “The Fueling Education initiative and challenge demonstrates the power of connecting students to STEM in a global context. We are thrilled to congratulate the 2021 Fueling Education Challenge winners for their thoughtful problem-solving projects.”

“It’s inspiring to see the innovations young leaders come up to some of the world’s biggest challenges,” said Beth Meyer, Vice President of Corporate & Community Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We’re proud to empower students with the STEM resources they need to turn ideas into solutions that make the world better for us all.”

The annual challenge builds upon the CITGO Fueling Education initiative with Discovery Education, which creates unique opportunities for student engagement by highlighting the profound impacts STEM can have on local communities and the broader world. Through educator resources, student challenges, comprehensive lesson plans, educator guides, and dynamic video content, Fueling Education helps to fuel the spirit of innovation in students everywhere. All the resources from the initiative can be accessed online at and through the Discovery Education’s flexible K-12 learning platform corporate and community education partnerships channel.
